Confirmed by series creator Rob Thomas (not the musician guy), Veronica was born between August 1 and August 22 in 1987 in Neptune, California, i.e., the town without a middle class. Yes, a girl named Mars in Neptune - she later drives a Saturn. In the beginning, her home life was charmed. She may not have been the wealthiest little girl around, but her parents, Keith and Lianne Mars, loved her enormously.

Unfortunately, "in the beginning" only lasted about five years. By the time she was six, Veronica had noticed that Lianne had problems with alcohol and was already noting how full the bottles were around the house.

Keith went from being a deputy to being elected sheriff when Veronica was nine. This meant that Veronica was at the Balboa County Courthouse often, visiting her father for lunch and doing her homework while listening to dispatch.

Veronica's life improved when she became best friends with Lilly Kane, and the two of them made it a point to eat lunch together every day starting in middle school. Thanks to her friendship with Lilly, dating Lilly's brother Duncan, and her father being the sheriff, Veronica was accepted into the top clique at Neptune High, the 09ers, so named for their wealthy zip code.

In September of her sophomore year, Duncan dumped her and wouldn't tell her why. Veronica was still welcome in the 09er clique, however.

And then Lilly Kane was found murdered, and everything changed.
